The Doorstep to Hell | Chapter 3

2024-06-28 00:36:56

In the early morning hours of November 2, 2007, Justin Gaines walked out of a popular nightclub on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia and was never seen again. The investigation into Gaines' disappearance quickly went cold and remained so until 2015, when a man confessed to taking part in his murder. Though this detailed confession described what happened to Justin Gaines, who was involved, and where his body was placed, no arrest has ever been made. Host Sean Kipe digs into this story to find out what really happened to Justin Gaines and tries to make sense of the still ongoing investigation. But as Sean gets deeper, he finds himself in an underworld of drugs, money, and murder.

This podcast is intended for mature audiences.

[00:38.86 - 00:52.04]

Investigators in Gwinnett County are working to identify human skeletal remains found in Dekula, the news catching the attention of a mother of a college student who went missing in Gwinnett County, continue to search for the body of missing teen Justin Gaines.

[00:52.04 - 00:58.68]

Both the Department of Natural Resources and the Walton County Sheriff's Department were on hand to search the wells and waterway.

[00:58.76 - 01:08.78]

Gwinnett County police searched every square inch of these woods off of Georgia Highway 316 and Drowning Creek Road in Dekula, where someone found human skeletal remains Monday evening.

[01:14.50 - 01:22.14]

In 2015, investigators followed a tip that Justin Gaines had been buried in an abandoned well in Walton County, Georgia.

[01:22.94 - 01:28.58]

After three days of searching, drilling wells, and using cadaver dogs, authorities came up empty.

[01:29.92 - 01:37.40]

This would be one of many similar attempts to find Justin, all providing false hope, all ending in disappointment.

[01:38.28 - 01:47.44]

Since Justin Gaines disappeared 16 years ago, his family has had no choice but to move on with their lives the best they can while waiting for closure.

[01:48.50 - 01:52.64]

But closure doesn't come easy when there have been no arrests made for his death.

[01:53.36 - 01:55.56]

He's still officially listed as a missing person.

[01:56.46 - 02:01.78]

With no body found, the family can't even properly lay him to rest and say their final goodbyes.

[02:02.78 - 02:09.40]

For Erica Wilson, not being able to say goodbye yet means there is still a chance that Justin could return to her one day.

[02:09.98 - 02:16.90]

Until then, she keeps that hope alive and the proverbial candle in the window lit to guide him home.

4
Speaker 4
[02:33.12 - 02:35.20]

Maybe it's a psychological thing.

[02:36.46 - 02:39.42]

Everything I hear, of course, is Justin's gone.

[02:40.60 - 02:42.96]

All these stories of him being murdered.

[02:44.60 - 02:47.00]

But, I mean, I'd wonder what he'd be doing now.

[02:48.08 - 02:49.68]

You just never know.

[02:51.58 - 02:57.84]

A lot of people that have missing children declare him dead and, I mean, it's probably what happened.

[02:57.84 - 03:02.06]

But, I mean, that's just like, in my mind, giving up hope.

[03:03.74 - 03:07.44]

Until I have closure, I mean, if I don't have hope, what do I have?

[03:10.94 - 03:18.10]

I try to think of positive things or maybe things that might have happened or I would like to have seen happen, you know.

[03:20.24 - 03:23.62]

The best story would be someone was threatening Justin and said,

[03:25.12 - 03:32.00]

we're going to kill your family or whatever and Justin said, man, I got to pretend I'm dead because I don't want them to kill my family and he's protecting us.

[03:33.20 - 03:35.32]

You know, that's how I would like to believe it.

[03:37.26 - 03:43.56]

I mean, I know that's probably not the case, but I wish it was.

1
Speaker 1
[04:06.74 - 04:13.36]

From Waveland, I'm Sean Kite and this is Drowning Creek.

3
Speaker 3
[04:20.34 - 04:23.10]

Good afternoon, Texas Equity Search. This is Sheila.

[04:24.24 - 04:28.12]

Hi, yes. Is this the anonymous line? I can give you some information.

[04:28.28 - 04:29.04]

Yes, ma'am.

1
Speaker 1
[04:31.08 - 04:38.82]

The anonymous call that Bob Pulno heard on December 17, 2007 changed the direction of the investigation on a dime.

[04:39.90 - 04:47.52]

This was the first time investigators had heard anything about Justin possibly being involved in drugs in any way, either using or selling them.

[04:48.14 - 04:51.86]

And while it was hard for some to wrap their heads around this information at first,

[04:52.20 - 04:59.24]

it did seem to give some possible explanation of why he might have disappeared if there were drugs or drug money involved.

2
Speaker 2
[05:00.58 - 05:12.86]

It was very important now for me to look at Justin Gaines in a rather different light that he may be involved with dealing drugs.

[05:13.96 - 05:19.94]

That was the first indication that I had of any possible drug dealing.

1
Speaker 1
[05:21.24 - 05:26.64]

The call you're about to hear and the information contained within it has never been released to the public.

[05:27.30 - 05:32.96]

Bob Pulno had hoped that by putting requests out in the local news media, the anonymous caller would reach back out.

[05:33.46 - 05:34.66]

But that still hasn't happened.

[05:35.40 - 05:39.90]

This call came into Texas EquiSearch, the firm that was helping to search for Justin.

3
Speaker 3
[05:39.90 - 05:47.20]

I heard that Justin owed a guy named Chino a lot of money.

[05:48.52 - 05:50.94]

I know a girl named Tabitha.

[05:51.34 - 05:58.88]

She said that she was with him earlier that night at Wild Bill's and then she left and went home.

[05:59.40 - 06:06.98]

After she was already at home, Justin called to try to get a ride and Tabitha could not come back and get him.

[06:06.98 - 06:13.68]

But then she also mentioned that he owed Chino a lot of money.

[06:15.48 - 06:19.46]

I don't know that it's Chino or what, this is just what I've heard.

[06:19.48 - 06:21.30]

Is it Chino like C-H-I-N-O?

[06:21.48 - 06:24.38]

That's what I'm assuming, that's what she said, Chino.

[06:25.78 - 06:31.26]

And that he owed a good bit of different people some money about drugs.

[06:33.70 - 06:37.96]

I was going up Club Drive one day and we crossed over Pleasant Hill.

[06:38.78 - 06:44.48]

After you go on down a little ways, there are like apartments there, kind of like the projects looking.

[06:45.08 - 06:49.90]

And my daughter even said, Mom, look, there's where Tabitha said Chino lived.

[06:50.96 - 06:55.32]

And my daughter's 13 and that freaked me out, that my daughter would know this stuff.

[06:55.32 - 06:59.68]

You know, my heart just goes out to this family.

[07:00.84 - 07:09.24]

And when I heard this, I said, I don't care if you're lying to me or not, I'm letting somebody know because this could be life or death for this boy.

1
Speaker 1
[07:10.08 - 07:15.36]

The operator goes on to try and get more information about what the caller heard and keep her on the line.

3
Speaker 3
[07:16.52 - 07:21.36]

Okay, so he called Tabitha, said that he was needing a ride, but she could not go pick him up.

[07:21.36 - 07:22.76]

That's what she said.

[07:23.94 - 07:24.08]

Okay.

[07:24.34 - 07:28.92]

And I said, well, if that's so, then your number should be in his cell phone.

[07:29.12 - 07:31.10]

She goes, well, they haven't found his cell phone yet.

[07:31.18 - 07:37.38]

Now, I don't know if y'all have or not, but if so, then her number should be in there and she's already should have been questioned.

[07:38.26 - 07:43.56]

But I don't know if she's just a little shit stir or she's just running her mouth, but she acted like she knew it.

[07:43.98 - 07:44.38]

Okay.

1
Speaker 1
[07:44.94 - 07:53.50]

Here is the biggest missed opportunity regarding this call, getting the caller's name, which she seemed ready to give up if just pressed a little bit.

3
Speaker 3
[07:54.26 - 07:54.64]

Okay.

[07:54.84 - 07:58.50]

And you don't want to leave no information, no name or number or anything?

[07:59.62 - 08:01.92]

I don't have any idea her number.

[08:02.00 - 08:03.52]

You don't want to leave your name or number?

[08:04.16 - 08:07.32]

Well, I just, I just don't want, I don't know.

1
Speaker 1
[08:07.54 - 08:08.80]

You don't, I mean, that's up to you.

3
Speaker 3
[08:08.80 - 08:09.86]

Okay, honey.

[08:10.12 - 08:10.96]

I guess not.

[08:11.06 - 08:17.06]

I just hope that this could, y'all could investigate this Chino person and just see what's behind it.

[08:17.08 - 08:19.22]

I don't have any idea, but that's what I've heard.

[08:19.38 - 08:19.70]

All right.

[08:19.70 - 08:20.62]

Well, thank you for calling.

[08:20.94 - 08:21.98]

Oh, sure, sweetheart.

[08:22.34 - 08:23.36]

Good luck to you.

[08:23.42 - 08:23.88]

Thank you.

[08:24.02 - 08:24.36]

Okay.

[08:24.60 - 08:25.00]

Bye-bye.

1
Speaker 1
[08:25.66 - 08:27.94]

Now, the call provides more questions than answers.

[08:28.56 - 08:29.26]

Who is Chino?

[08:29.58 - 08:30.54]

Who is Tabitha?

[08:30.92 - 08:34.32]

How did this woman's 13-year-old daughter know anything about this?

[08:34.32 - 08:40.22]

And most importantly, is there really any truth to any of this information or is it merely rumor?

[08:40.82 - 08:43.30]

One of my first thoughts was focused on the name Chino.

[08:43.76 - 08:48.32]

It obviously sounds Latino, but I also know that Chino is slang for Asian,

[08:48.78 - 08:50.78]

most notably someone of Chinese descent.

[08:51.18 - 08:55.18]

And I also know that several people saw an Asian man at Justin's table that night.

[08:55.82 - 09:02.54]

Our eyewitness Susan also claimed that the Asian man and Justin went out back to the club's smoking section for just a brief time.

[09:02.54 - 09:04.24]

So could that be Chino?

[09:04.52 - 09:06.50]

Could that have been a drug deal she was witnessing?

[09:07.00 - 09:10.50]

And was Chino in the black car with Justin as he left the club?

[09:11.08 - 09:12.66]

I asked Bob Pulno about Chino.

2
Speaker 2
[09:13.42 - 09:14.56]

I know who Chino is.

5
Speaker 5
[09:14.90 - 09:15.50]

Is he Chinese?

[09:15.92 - 09:16.16]

No.

2
Speaker 2
[09:16.74 - 09:18.08]

I can't go any further with that.

[09:18.70 - 09:19.24]

Why is that?

[09:19.84 - 09:20.88]

I'm not going there.

[09:21.32 - 09:22.52]

I'm just letting you know I know him.

[09:22.58 - 09:22.82]

Okay.

[09:22.94 - 09:24.18]

I can't get into that.

[09:24.82 - 09:25.24]

Fair enough.

1
Speaker 1
[09:28.62 - 09:33.56]

Do you believe that Chino is the Asian guy that was in the club?

[09:33.80 - 09:34.38]

Who would say that?

[09:34.90 - 09:36.28]

Do you think that's the same person?

2
Speaker 2
[09:37.18 - 09:37.74]

Don't think so.

[09:38.10 - 09:41.62]

I found a lot of Chinos in Atlanta, a lot of them.

[09:41.96 - 09:47.72]

Only one of them is involved in this case, but that's it.

[09:48.30 - 09:50.94]

So don't go looking for Chino, you know.

[09:51.66 - 09:55.14]

And that's all that needs to know about that right now.

[09:55.14 - 09:56.64]

That's where we're going to have to leave it.

[09:56.76 - 10:00.44]

I know that's something that investigators don't like loose ends,

[10:00.92 - 10:04.90]

but you're going to have to leave it there unless you find out on your own.

[10:05.40 - 10:05.60]

Okay?

1
Speaker 1
[10:06.14 - 10:06.40]

Yes.

2
Speaker 2
[10:06.64 - 10:09.82]

And if you find out, you can talk with him and I,

[10:10.18 - 10:13.16]

and we'll see if we're on the same page at that point.

[10:13.26 - 10:17.12]

But we can't, I can't go beyond that.

1
Speaker 1
[10:18.34 - 10:22.62]

Clearly, Bob feels he has some reason to keep this information on Chino from me.

[10:22.62 - 10:25.92]

Is it because he feels I don't yet know enough about this case

[10:25.92 - 10:28.34]

or Chino's relevance to share more with me?

[10:28.94 - 10:30.30]

Does he not fully trust me yet?

[10:30.70 - 10:31.96]

Is it for my safety?

[10:32.50 - 10:35.46]

All I know is I really want to find Chino now.

[10:36.80 - 10:39.52]

And what about the name Tabitha that the caller mentioned?

[10:40.04 - 10:40.88]

Who is she?

[10:41.18 - 10:42.46]

How does she play into this case?

2
Speaker 2
[10:43.14 - 10:45.90]

I believe I know who she is, but she will not talk with me.

[10:47.32 - 10:48.64]

Was she in Justin's room?

[10:49.54 - 10:49.98]

Tabitha?

[10:50.28 - 10:51.14]

There were several.

1
Speaker 1
[10:51.88 - 10:52.98]

Several Tabithas?

2
Speaker 2
[10:53.08 - 10:54.48]

Yes, three as I recall.

1
Speaker 1
[10:55.46 - 10:57.16]

Tabitha isn't that common of a name,

[10:57.62 - 10:59.92]

but there were three Tabithas in Justin's phone,

[11:00.36 - 11:04.32]

and one he allegedly called that night looking for a ride home from Wild Bill's,

[11:04.38 - 11:05.70]

if you're to believe the caller.

[11:06.32 - 11:09.54]

If that's true, then they must have been somewhat close

[11:09.54 - 11:13.68]

for him to feel comfortable enough calling her at that late hour asking for a favor,

[11:14.08 - 11:16.14]

though Bob is again tight-lipped with details.

[11:16.70 - 11:20.98]

The caller said that Tabitha was with Justin at some point inside the club

[11:20.98 - 11:22.82]

but then left before he did,

[11:23.22 - 11:26.98]

so I need to try to find out who she is and what she knows.

[11:27.44 - 11:32.06]

There really is a lot of information I feel could be obtained by speaking with this caller.

[11:32.58 - 11:37.32]

Hopefully, this tip being played in its entirety will jog someone's memory

[11:37.32 - 11:42.14]

or provoke that caller to again reach out to law enforcement or even to me.

[11:42.90 - 11:45.46]

Perhaps somehow she'll hear this

[11:45.46 - 11:48.92]

and know how important this information could be to this case

[11:48.92 - 11:51.28]

and to finding Justin.

[11:56.22 - 12:00.04]

I've now heard that Justin Gaines may have been involved in drug dealing,

[12:00.34 - 12:03.40]

but I don't know to what extent or if that's even true at all.

[12:03.94 - 12:05.48]

Bob Pulno seems to think so,

[12:05.80 - 12:10.04]

but for whatever reason isn't sharing all the information he has about this with me yet,

[12:10.34 - 12:12.56]

namely who Chino and Tabitha are.

[12:13.02 - 12:17.50]

The anonymous tip also revealed that Justin owed money not only to Chino

[12:17.50 - 12:19.74]

but to several people for drugs.

2
Speaker 2
[12:20.66 - 12:26.32]

What I believe and what I'm told is that he was trying to get into the business

[12:26.32 - 12:28.70]

and he didn't know what he was doing.

[12:29.48 - 12:31.14]

Justin was in over his head.

[12:33.00 - 12:35.88]

He owed a lot of money, as that caller said,

[12:36.14 - 12:40.82]

to different people higher up that he had tried to get in the door with.

1
Speaker 1
[12:41.08 - 12:45.06]

So they were fronting him product and he was not able to push it

2
Speaker 2
[12:45.06 - 12:49.66]

and he was doing it or whatever and not paying back.

[12:49.92 - 12:52.02]

Correct. And a lot of money.

1
Speaker 1
[12:52.78 - 12:55.40]

How could Justin Gaines have gotten mixed up in all this?

[12:56.02 - 12:59.36]

Most people I've talked to said that, yeah, Justin liked to drink,

[12:59.62 - 13:03.78]

but he didn't use drugs, not even weed, as Mike and Patrick Heiser told me.

[13:04.18 - 13:06.40]

Justin was always very street smart, I would say.

[13:06.74 - 13:10.56]

So, you know, he was very non-reactionary to it,

[13:10.78 - 13:12.66]

very non-confrontational towards it.

[13:12.66 - 13:16.80]

Like, it could be there and he would choose not to partake or want anything to do with it,

4
Speaker 4
[13:17.00 - 13:19.34]

but he wouldn't, you know, go to the extreme and say, like,

5
Speaker 5
[13:19.68 - 13:22.04]

I don't want to be around you anymore or anything like that.

[13:22.58 - 13:24.92]

But I don't know that Justin ever smoked weed, actually.

1
Speaker 1
[13:26.02 - 13:29.32]

No, I don't think I ever actually saw Justin smoke weed.

[13:29.74 - 13:32.52]

I remember him drinking. I don't ever remember him smoking.

[13:32.84 - 13:36.44]

Katie Kuhn shared something else with me when I asked if Justin had ever used drugs.

4
Speaker 4
[13:38.12 - 13:40.16]

Probably pot. Probably weed.

[13:41.02 - 13:45.54]

Because I'm sure him and I smoked together at some point back in the day.

[13:46.44 - 13:48.72]

But anything past that, not to my knowledge.

[13:49.62 - 13:53.06]

But I don't know what he was doing when I wasn't around.

[13:54.08 - 13:59.78]

You know, it's easy for people to hide things around their friends and family

[13:59.78 - 14:01.16]

when they're not there all the time.

[14:01.56 - 14:05.10]

And just not do those things when those people are around.

1
Speaker 1
[14:05.56 - 14:06.68]

Katie makes a good point.

[14:06.68 - 14:09.34]

She wasn't with Justin all the time,

[14:09.48 - 14:11.92]

so who knows what he was doing when she wasn't around.

[14:12.74 - 14:16.28]

Several of his friends had begun pulling away from him after he started college,

[14:16.62 - 14:19.68]

in part because of some of the people he was now hanging out with,

[14:19.92 - 14:20.96]

like his roommate Chris.

[14:21.24 - 14:22.74]

Chris wasn't good newts.

2
Speaker 2
[14:23.38 - 14:24.32]

In what way?

1
Speaker 1
[14:25.62 - 14:28.46]

Chris was into a lot of things that I didn't really approve of.

2
Speaker 2
[14:29.14 - 14:29.54]

Like what?

1
Speaker 1
[14:29.90 - 14:30.22]

Drugs.

[14:30.76 - 14:31.76]

What kind of drugs?

[14:32.16 - 14:32.48]

Weed.

[14:33.40 - 14:35.52]

The Chris that Patrick is referring to

[14:35.52 - 14:39.22]

is the same one that drove Justin to wild bills the night he disappeared.

[14:39.82 - 14:42.58]

Justin was certainly around people who were using drugs,

[14:43.02 - 14:46.10]

though I haven't heard anything yet confirming he was selling them.

[14:46.64 - 14:49.28]

And yeah, I know, it seems like I'm talking about weed

[14:49.28 - 14:50.98]

like they were shooting heroin or something,

[14:51.10 - 14:53.06]

but remember this was 2007,

[14:53.50 - 14:55.92]

well before weed was legalized in half the country.

[14:56.34 - 14:58.60]

It was a bigger deal then than it is now.

[14:58.92 - 15:01.80]

And no one's ever claimed that he was only selling weed.

[15:02.22 - 15:06.38]

Patrick also tells me that wild bills was a place you could score drugs if you wanted them.

[15:06.74 - 15:10.20]

Or if you were dealing, it was pretty easy to sell them there too.

[15:10.80 - 15:12.10]

You could do anything you wanted to.

[15:12.38 - 15:13.62]

You could do anything you wanted to.

[15:13.78 - 15:16.10]

If you wanted it, it was there.

[15:16.46 - 15:17.48]

If you knew the right people.

[15:18.22 - 15:20.68]

Security did their best job to actually keep that out,

[15:20.86 - 15:22.00]

and a lot of times they did,

[15:22.26 - 15:24.72]

but if you wanted drugs, you could find them.

[15:25.26 - 15:28.18]

You go out to the parking lot, come back in with your wristband, you were fine.

[15:29.06 - 15:31.14]

You're talking about a massive building.

[15:31.14 - 15:33.14]

With no controls.

[15:34.10 - 15:36.72]

Could this be why the owners and management of Wild Bills

[15:36.72 - 15:39.78]

initially didn't want to release the surveillance footage from the club?

[15:40.08 - 15:42.56]

It took police intervening before it was obtained.

[15:43.94 - 15:46.70]

As I digest the new information concerning Justin,

[15:47.06 - 15:49.58]

I think back to a few things I've heard so far,

[15:49.92 - 15:52.08]

some of which didn't seem to make sense at the time.

[15:53.04 - 15:57.16]

Justin, Chris, and Amanda not being seen on the Quick Trip security footage

[15:57.16 - 16:00.08]

or by the staff, despite Chris claiming they went there.

[16:00.08 - 16:04.60]

The four and a half hour period of time between leaving Justin's parents' house

[16:04.60 - 16:06.96]

and arriving at Wild Bills at nearly midnight.

[16:07.94 - 16:11.14]

It's also odd to me that Justin seemed adamant about going inside

[16:11.14 - 16:13.16]

even though his friends decided to leave.

[16:13.62 - 16:15.30]

Yet just over a half hour later,

[16:15.66 - 16:17.88]

he was looking for a ride home from the packed club.

[16:18.38 - 16:19.68]

Something just doesn't add up there.

[16:20.10 - 16:23.34]

But if I add in the theory of Justin dabbling in drug dealing,

[16:23.90 - 16:25.50]

things start to make more sense.

[16:26.18 - 16:29.66]

Justin made a trip out back to the club's smoking section before returning

[16:29.66 - 16:32.38]

just a few minutes later, even though he didn't smoke.

[16:32.78 - 16:35.88]

And finally, Justin getting into the car with several strangers

[16:35.88 - 16:40.92]

and his phone data showing a final ping four miles in the opposite direction of his house.

[16:41.48 - 16:45.44]

Former FBI agent Mike Rising, who now heads up the cold case unit

[16:45.44 - 16:47.26]

at the Walton County Sheriff's Office,

[16:47.56 - 16:51.40]

is really the only investigator left officially working Justin's case.

[16:51.80 - 16:52.94]

He's kind of the last hope.

5
Speaker 5
[16:54.50 - 16:58.80]

I worked bank robberies and violent crime in Buffalo for a year.

[16:58.80 - 17:02.98]

I was transferred to Miami and worked, was on a similar squad,

[17:03.26 - 17:06.26]

kidnappings, violent crime, bank robberies there.

1
Speaker 1
[17:07.00 - 17:09.26]

Rising has literally done it all in his career.

[17:09.68 - 17:13.80]

He worked in the FBI's first drug squad, was recruited to their SWAT team,

[17:14.20 - 17:18.36]

worked undercover ops, tracked serial killers and arsonists, you name it.

[17:18.78 - 17:20.90]

He's got the stories to go with the resume.

5
Speaker 5
[17:23.60 - 17:27.36]

The scenario was I had a briefcase full of Coke and I was on the lake

[17:27.36 - 17:28.98]

on the waterfront in Chicago.

[17:29.50 - 17:32.98]

Called Banco Sheriffs was the name of the undercover case.

[17:33.00 - 17:35.08]

The guy cocked a revolver in my ear and said,

[17:35.16 - 17:36.82]

you move, I'm going to blow your fucking brains out.

[17:36.82 - 17:39.46]

I got into a gunfight with some guys and got medevaced.

1
Speaker 1
[17:40.24 - 17:44.38]

Rising is also one of the people who initially were not particularly thrilled

[17:44.38 - 17:48.66]

that some podcaster was being welcomed into the investigation of Justin Gaines.

[17:49.48 - 17:51.14]

Rising, alongside Bob Pulno,

[17:51.54 - 17:55.68]

make up practically the entire knowledge base of Justin's case at this point.

[17:55.68 - 17:58.98]

There's little that these two men collectively don't know.

[17:59.78 - 18:02.76]

When I sat down with both men at the Walton County Sheriff's Office,

[18:03.18 - 18:06.18]

they took me deeper into the complex spider web of this case

[18:06.18 - 18:11.26]

and gave me their theories on the person they feel is spinning that web.

5
Speaker 5
[18:12.38 - 18:15.26]

Dylan Glass said he killed Justin.

[18:15.50 - 18:19.72]

That's probably recorded in 15 different reports.

1
Speaker 1
[18:20.00 - 18:22.18]

That's a name you're going to hear a lot in this podcast.

[18:22.18 - 18:26.36]

Nearly every theory surrounding this case, every scenario,

[18:26.92 - 18:29.92]

every rumor involves the name Dylan Glass.

[18:30.52 - 18:34.42]

Because he's the one who confessed to his role in the murder of Justin Gaines.

[18:34.86 - 18:36.12]

But who is this man?

[18:36.56 - 18:39.58]

And if he confessed, why hasn't he been charged with murder?

[18:44.54 - 18:48.10]

The name Dylan Glass was first heard in connection with this case

[18:48.10 - 18:51.12]

shortly after Erica Wilson reported Justin missing.

[18:51.12 - 18:55.58]

When a woman named Bridget sent her 15-year-old brother a MySpace message

[18:55.58 - 19:00.20]

claiming that Dylan, who she quasi-dated at the time, had killed Justin.

2
Speaker 2
[19:00.98 - 19:05.20]

Bridget's brother had notified Monroe Police Department

[19:05.20 - 19:10.16]

that he had information that Dylan Glass killed Justin Gaines.

1
Speaker 1
[19:10.66 - 19:13.90]

Bridget's little brother Josh then reached out to Erica Wilson

[19:13.90 - 19:15.32]

through her online message board.

[19:15.82 - 19:17.98]

She then put Josh in touch with Bob Pulno.

2
Speaker 2
[19:17.98 - 19:21.18]

The night that I interviewed James Irving,

[19:21.34 - 19:25.98]

I stepped out of that interview and had a message on my phone.

[19:27.06 - 19:33.20]

He said that his sister's boyfriend, Dylan Glass, killed Justin Gaines.

1
Speaker 1
[19:33.54 - 19:37.74]

The call Bob received from Josh was on the same night he interviewed James Irving,

[19:37.90 - 19:41.32]

who, if you'll remember, was the same eyewitness who saw Justin Gaines

[19:41.32 - 19:43.68]

getting into the car outside of Wild Bill's.

[19:44.06 - 19:46.98]

And allegedly, all this information originated with a girl named Christy.

[19:47.24 - 19:50.34]

She, like Bridget, was a teenager who was close to Dylan.

[19:51.22 - 19:55.28]

Dylan, Christy, and Bridget all lived in the Conestoga trailer park.

[19:55.90 - 19:58.30]

It was low income, even for a trailer park,

[19:58.52 - 20:02.60]

and just a few years ago was permanently closed due to code violations and leveled.

[20:03.14 - 20:06.04]

Many of the residents of Conestoga lived in squalor,

[20:06.36 - 20:10.12]

and many of the trailers were falling apart, dilapidated, and unsafe.

[20:10.76 - 20:15.42]

By the mid-2000s, Conestoga was known locally as a very rough place.

[20:15.42 - 20:18.84]

It was rampant with crime, drugs, prostitution,

[20:19.30 - 20:21.96]

and there were even rumors of devil worship within the park,

[20:22.26 - 20:24.92]

giving way to the nickname, The Doorstep to Hell.

2
Speaker 2
[20:25.72 - 20:33.24]

Dylan, I'm told, by age 14, he was getting some of his food out of trash cans

[20:33.24 - 20:36.14]

outside the trailers at the trailer park.

1
Speaker 1
[20:36.84 - 20:38.86]

Bob also tells me that through interviews,

[20:39.08 - 20:42.58]

he learned that Dylan's mother, Tammy, was addicted to crack cocaine.

[20:42.58 - 20:45.56]

There was no real home life, at least not a good one,

[20:45.92 - 20:50.66]

and these factors may have played a key role in the path Dylan would choose in life.

2
Speaker 2
[20:51.56 - 20:56.42]

It's also told to me by people who knew Dylan very well growing up with him

[20:56.42 - 21:01.60]

that he would learn to fight at a very early age without any reservation

[21:01.60 - 21:05.98]

for the purpose of robbing, subduing the victim,

[21:06.56 - 21:08.90]

and taking whatever they had on them.

1
Speaker 1
[21:09.30 - 21:11.76]

In and out of the system from early adolescence,

[21:11.76 - 21:13.94]

Dylan sold and used narcotics.

[21:14.44 - 21:17.30]

He stole and eventually got involved in gangs.

[21:17.98 - 21:22.34]

Walton County authorities were all familiar with Dylan, and for good reason.

2
Speaker 2
[21:22.82 - 21:23.64]

Dylan grew up hard.

[21:24.18 - 21:26.14]

He had no reservation about hurting someone.

[21:27.04 - 21:30.92]

From all I've gathered in the past 15, 16 years in the case,

[21:31.02 - 21:35.32]

I've seen no remorse for any of the crimes that he has committed.

[21:35.46 - 21:38.76]

He will admit to you that he's committed some crimes,

[21:38.76 - 21:42.74]

but he would always stop short of any involvement

[21:43.70 - 21:47.02]

in one of the more serious crimes, such as murder.

1
Speaker 1
[21:47.92 - 21:51.96]

Many would consider Dylan Glass to be an imposing and intimidating figure,

[21:52.36 - 21:53.92]

a thug, a gangbanger.

[21:54.52 - 21:58.52]

Most of his body, including his head and his face, are covered with tattoos.

[21:59.30 - 22:02.66]

But even after all I've heard of Dylan, is he really a killer?

2
Speaker 2
[22:03.46 - 22:08.72]

Personally, I think he has the propensity, the ability, the knowledge,

[22:09.62 - 22:11.60]

the experience to cover up.

[22:12.44 - 22:17.26]

People who knew his mother well and Dylan have told me

[22:17.26 - 22:21.72]

that his mother is known widely as the cleanup woman.

[22:22.42 - 22:26.02]

She would come after Dylan and clean up crime scenes

[22:26.02 - 22:29.10]

to get rid of blood and DNA, if possible,

[22:29.10 - 22:34.84]

and use bleach and other means of cleaning up an area.

1
Speaker 1
[22:35.06 - 22:38.44]

If you think that sounds crazy, I'm with you. It does.

[22:38.88 - 22:42.64]

But as I spoke to people about Dylan, that's actually something I heard too,

[22:42.94 - 22:45.32]

that his mother was known to clean up after his crimes.

[22:45.86 - 22:49.28]

Aside from Justin Gaines, Dylan has never been accused of murder.

[22:49.54 - 22:53.58]

However, in 2015, he was charged with conspiracy to commit murder

[22:53.58 - 22:55.02]

in an unrelated case.

2
Speaker 2
[22:55.02 - 22:59.98]

Dylan can talk to you, look you in the eye, straight to the face,

[23:00.90 - 23:03.78]

and you would never know that he's lying.

1
Speaker 1
[23:04.32 - 23:05.52]

Like sociopathic?

2
Speaker 2
[23:05.94 - 23:09.90]

I would say yes. No conscience. None.

1
Speaker 1
[23:24.56 - 23:27.76]

Dylan Glass has been considered a prime suspect for years,

[23:28.04 - 23:29.98]

and he's been questioned numerous times.

[23:30.54 - 23:34.56]

But in the fall of 2015, while serving time on an unrelated offense,

[23:35.00 - 23:36.54]

Dylan spilled his guts to authorities.

[23:37.14 - 23:39.88]

It is possible that he hoped his pending sentence for gang-rape

[23:39.88 - 23:43.32]

would get reduced in exchange for his cooperation.

[23:43.96 - 23:45.48]

But he said what he said.

[23:46.46 - 23:49.64]

Dylan's story begins after Justin left Wild Bill's

[23:49.64 - 23:51.82]

and arrived at a house party in Snellville,

[23:52.16 - 23:54.54]

located several miles southeast of the club.

[23:55.02 - 23:57.56]

The house belonged to a man named Andy Pickens,

[23:57.82 - 24:00.12]

who was at the time dating Dylan's mother, Tammy.

[24:00.94 - 24:02.90]

Andy Pickens owned a small painting service.

[24:03.48 - 24:06.64]

He was also a drug dealer, often hosting small house parties.

[24:06.64 - 24:09.92]

People would hang out, drink, and slip off into a room

[24:09.92 - 24:12.14]

or into the basement to use their drug of choice,

[24:12.40 - 24:13.90]

be it weed, coke, meth.

[24:14.22 - 24:15.40]

Nothing was really off limits.

[24:15.86 - 24:19.32]

And if you needed to score something, chances are you could find it at Andy's.

2
Speaker 2
[24:19.76 - 24:21.66]

Dylan was big into meth.

1
Speaker 1
[24:21.84 - 24:22.06]

Sure.

2
Speaker 2
[24:22.74 - 24:23.16]

And Leon.

1
Speaker 1
[24:23.56 - 24:25.62]

Friends with Dylan and Andy Pickens,

[24:25.98 - 24:28.40]

Leon was a local thug, a small-time dealer.

[24:28.78 - 24:32.58]

He was also allegedly at Andy's house party that night that Justin disappeared.

[24:33.42 - 24:35.80]

Criminal intelligence analyst Carissa Durow,

[24:36.04 - 24:38.70]

who joined Mike, Bob, and myself in our face-to-face,

[24:39.04 - 24:41.04]

shared a surprising connection in this case.

[24:41.52 - 24:44.10]

It involves Heather, the woman in the black dress.

[24:44.48 - 24:44.72]

Yes.

4
Speaker 4
[24:45.22 - 24:47.76]

She was Leon's girlfriend at the time.

1
Speaker 1
[24:48.58 - 24:50.98]

Leon was also reported by eyewitnesses

[24:50.98 - 24:53.90]

to be in the parking lot of the pool hall earlier that night

[24:53.90 - 24:57.46]

where Justin and his friends were drinking before heading to the club.

[24:58.10 - 25:00.48]

Things suddenly start to make a bit more sense to me now

[25:00.48 - 25:02.48]

as to how these people are all connected.

[25:03.40 - 25:05.00]

Heather and Leon were dating.

[25:05.76 - 25:08.66]

Bob believes he has Heather on video at Wild Bill's that night,

[25:08.78 - 25:11.44]

but it's hard to be sure because the footage is so grainy.

[25:12.10 - 25:15.48]

Leon was also seen on camera arriving and leaving.

[25:16.18 - 25:18.22]

Knowing the connection between Leon and Heather,

[25:18.62 - 25:20.06]

several theories have arisen.

[25:21.06 - 25:24.36]

Was Heather used to lure Justin to Andy Pickens' house that night

[25:24.36 - 25:28.24]

so that he could be robbed for the cash that he was said to have been flashing around,

[25:28.46 - 25:29.52]

as some have speculated?

[25:29.52 - 25:33.70]

Or was it to face some kind of punishment for the drug money he might have owed?

[25:34.24 - 25:35.78]

Did he just end up there with Heather

[25:35.78 - 25:38.54]

and she had no idea that anything was going to happen to him?

[25:39.02 - 25:41.24]

I've even heard that Justin was flirting with a girl

[25:41.24 - 25:43.46]

that someone else was interested in at the party

[25:43.46 - 25:44.90]

and that's how this all started.

[25:45.52 - 25:48.78]

It gets a little murky here due to some conflicting eyewitness accounts

[25:48.78 - 25:51.62]

and Dylan Glass' story isn't really clear on that either,

[25:51.78 - 25:52.78]

which is odd to me.

[25:53.30 - 25:54.72]

According to various accounts,

[25:55.10 - 25:58.28]

Dylan, Justin Gaines, Leon, and several others

[25:58.28 - 26:01.18]

ended up in the garage of the house in the early morning hours.

[26:01.70 - 26:03.64]

And that's where things took a turn for the worse.

[26:04.22 - 26:05.22]

Mike and Bob explain.

5
Speaker 5
[26:05.92 - 26:12.36]

At some point there's a tussle between Leon and Justin

[26:12.36 - 26:14.36]

and Justin was a big boy, healthy boy.

[26:15.24 - 26:17.54]

But Leon also was a pretty big guy.

1
Speaker 1
[26:17.88 - 26:21.44]

For whatever reason, Leon and Justin get into a fight in the garage

[26:21.44 - 26:23.46]

and Leon begins choking Justin.

2
Speaker 2
[26:23.94 - 26:27.14]

Dylan said that Leon had him choked from the front

[26:27.14 - 26:29.06]

and cut off his hair

[26:29.06 - 26:32.64]

and that snot was coming out of his nose

[26:32.64 - 26:37.12]

and he said blood was coming out of his mouth eventually

[26:37.12 - 26:39.36]

and he was fighting for his life.

1
Speaker 1
[26:39.90 - 26:42.68]

Dylan's mother Tammy was also in the house when all this happened.

[26:42.90 - 26:45.20]

According to statements she would later make to police,

[26:45.92 - 26:49.76]

Tammy's account is by far the most vivid and disturbing telling

[26:49.76 - 26:51.98]

of what happened to Justin Gaines that night.

2
Speaker 2
[26:53.70 - 26:58.12]

She said that he was choking him

[26:58.12 - 27:00.86]

and he could not breathe at all.

[27:01.68 - 27:06.64]

Justin stood up and Leon still had the choke armhole on his windpipe

[27:07.52 - 27:09.44]

and went down with him

[27:09.98 - 27:14.02]

at the point where she said, and he went down with him.

[27:14.14 - 27:17.10]

When she said those words, she was sobbing.

[27:17.64 - 27:21.46]

I saw visible tears floating down her face

[27:21.46 - 27:23.32]

and even one of the detectives said,

[27:23.40 - 27:24.94]

what are you so emotional about?

[27:25.52 - 27:27.70]

And she said, we're talking about my son.

[27:28.76 - 27:32.70]

And that's when she was saying that Justin was dead

[27:33.46 - 27:37.52]

and that Dylan got down on his knees over Justin

[27:37.52 - 27:41.56]

and took his earring out of his ear and put it in his own ear

[27:41.56 - 27:44.28]

and went through his pockets

[27:44.28 - 27:50.54]

and Dylan and Leon were arguing over who gets the necklace

[27:50.54 - 27:54.84]

and who gets the watch and who gets the money

[27:55.60 - 27:58.86]

and who gets the dope coming out of his pockets.

1
Speaker 1
[28:00.10 - 28:03.10]

According to Tammy's story, there was another person present,

[28:03.78 - 28:06.40]

a mid-level dealer who goes by the name New York.

[28:06.72 - 28:09.06]

He instructed the others on what to do next.

2
Speaker 2
[28:09.58 - 28:13.24]

New York came from around the corner of the garage

[28:13.24 - 28:15.30]

and said, roll him up.

[28:15.84 - 28:18.86]

And they rolled him up in painter's plastic,

[28:18.86 - 28:24.58]

which Andy Pickens left in the van for his work as a painter.

[28:25.80 - 28:28.76]

And they rolled up Justin in the plastic,

[28:29.78 - 28:31.68]

loaded Justin into the van.

[28:32.68 - 28:34.84]

She said the whole thing had been planned.

[28:35.56 - 28:36.48]

Those were her words.

[28:37.12 - 28:39.44]

It had all been planned, to back the van in,

[28:39.54 - 28:42.74]

the engine running, and to take him in the plastic

[28:42.74 - 28:45.92]

and that New York was giving the orders.

[28:45.92 - 28:50.84]

Tammy said that she heard the van doors close

[28:50.84 - 28:54.24]

and then heard what sounded like a gunshot.

1
Speaker 1
[28:59.38 - 29:01.74]

Tammy and Dylan's stories vary slightly,

[29:02.12 - 29:04.16]

but one aspect they have in common

[29:04.16 - 29:07.32]

is the claim that Justin was shot inside the van.

2
Speaker 2
[29:07.84 - 29:12.12]

Dylan told me he got the gun from Andy, a revolver.

[29:12.76 - 29:14.56]

He handed the gun to New York,

[29:14.56 - 29:17.38]

and New York was in the passenger front seat

[29:17.38 - 29:20.74]

and reached back and shot Justin in the head.

[29:22.02 - 29:23.92]

I don't know if that's true.

[29:24.46 - 29:26.92]

Tammy's saying that she just heard the gunshot.

1
Speaker 1
[29:27.44 - 29:29.28]

But Tammy wasn't the only one in the house

[29:29.28 - 29:32.26]

who heard a commotion followed by a gunshot.

5
Speaker 5
[29:32.42 - 29:35.70]

People inside the house hear a gunshot.

[29:36.78 - 29:40.10]

After they leave, people that were involved downstairs

[29:40.10 - 29:42.36]

in the confrontation are making comments.

[29:42.36 - 29:44.32]

We just killed that kid.

1
Speaker 1
[29:44.78 - 29:47.64]

How could so many people witness a murder like this

[29:47.64 - 29:48.96]

and not speak up?

2
Speaker 2
[29:49.68 - 29:52.14]

Fear feeds on itself,

[29:52.80 - 29:56.26]

especially when these paranoid people who are on drugs

[29:56.26 - 29:59.36]

and they see for themselves the carnage

[30:00.16 - 30:02.14]

that can be inflicted on them

[30:02.14 - 30:05.94]

and they're scared to death to get involved.

[30:06.60 - 30:10.06]

And that's why this has gone on for so long.

[30:11.06 - 30:12.04]

It's the fear.

1
Speaker 1
[30:13.36 - 30:14.96]

If this happened to Justin

[30:14.96 - 30:16.80]

simply because he owed someone money,

[30:17.32 - 30:18.48]

what would happen to you

[30:18.48 - 30:20.54]

if you ratted these people out to the police?

[30:21.38 - 30:23.76]

Fear is a powerful silencer.

[30:24.30 - 30:27.80]

But to Mike Rising, all hope might not be lost.

5
Speaker 5
[30:28.16 - 30:30.02]

There's just too many people involved,

[30:30.74 - 30:31.66]

too many witnesses.

[30:32.64 - 30:36.12]

The general story does not change.

[30:36.62 - 30:38.86]

To me, there's no such thing as a conspiracy

[30:38.86 - 30:40.18]

that can't be broken.

[30:40.88 - 30:42.66]

When you've got more than two people,

[30:42.96 - 30:44.58]

somebody's eventually going to talk,

[30:44.62 - 30:46.46]

and there are a lot of people in this.

1
Speaker 1
[30:47.26 - 30:49.58]

Dylan Glass did eventually talk, of course,

[30:49.74 - 30:51.80]

and his mother Tammy backed up his story.

[30:52.08 - 30:53.92]

Even though some of the details differed,

[30:54.00 - 30:55.72]

the general story was the same.

[30:56.04 - 30:58.54]

They both said that after Justin was choked out

[30:58.54 - 30:59.74]

and they thought he was dead,

[31:00.04 - 31:01.50]

he was wrapped in the paint tarp

[31:01.50 - 31:05.64]

and placed in Andy Pickens' 1986 white Chevy work van.

[31:05.64 - 31:08.76]

Justin began to thrash around when he started to come to

[31:08.76 - 31:11.16]

and then was shot in the head, killing him.

[31:11.64 - 31:13.68]

He was then transported to Lake Lanier,

[31:13.94 - 31:15.10]

just northeast of Atlanta,

[31:15.34 - 31:17.82]

where Pickens owned an old run-down houseboat,

[31:18.22 - 31:18.98]

a party pad.

2
Speaker 2
[31:21.60 - 31:24.60]

He owned that houseboat at Sunrise Cove Marina,

[31:25.34 - 31:27.90]

and Dylan would come there and party a lot

[31:27.90 - 31:29.86]

and do drugs with his friends.

1
Speaker 1
[31:30.02 - 31:32.68]

And one of those friends was a man named Martin Wilkie,

[31:32.80 - 31:34.78]

who was at the houseboat that night as well

[31:34.78 - 31:38.28]

and owned one of his own in the same marina, Sunrise Cove.

[31:38.76 - 31:40.98]

He was also at Pickens' house earlier that night,

[31:41.06 - 31:41.86]

according to witnesses,

[31:42.30 - 31:44.36]

when Leon is said to have choked Justin out.

[31:45.02 - 31:46.36]

According to Tammy's statements,

[31:46.78 - 31:49.08]

it was Justin and Wilkie who were fighting,

[31:49.42 - 31:50.86]

and Justin was getting the best of him,

[31:51.12 - 31:52.64]

prompting Leon to step in.

[31:53.08 - 31:54.36]

Why they were fighting is unclear,

[31:54.54 - 31:56.82]

but it has been suggested that it was over a woman,

[31:57.00 - 31:58.00]

as I've mentioned before.

[31:58.74 - 32:01.12]

Once at the houseboat, details are sketchy.

[32:01.50 - 32:03.60]

There are several accounts that Justin's body

[32:03.60 - 32:06.28]

was placed into a large black metal toolbox,

[32:06.78 - 32:08.42]

the kind you see on the back of a work truck,

[32:08.72 - 32:09.82]

and then dumped in the lake.

[32:10.16 - 32:12.46]

Just a few days later, the water level dropped

[32:12.46 - 32:13.84]

and the box became visible,

[32:14.16 - 32:16.26]

so his body was moved to Walton County

[32:16.26 - 32:17.60]

and dumped in an old well.

[32:17.96 - 32:20.38]

It's worth noting that the winter of 2007

[32:20.38 - 32:23.68]

had one of the lowest water levels on record for Lake Lanier,

[32:24.06 - 32:25.12]

so this is possible.

[32:25.64 - 32:27.80]

And thanks to the marina's guard shack records,

[32:28.08 - 32:30.12]

we do know that Andy Pickens' van

[32:30.12 - 32:33.16]

was at the Sunset Cove Marina early that morning,

[32:33.56 - 32:36.60]

and Martin Wilkie's vehicle passed through the security gate

[32:36.60 - 32:38.64]

at the same time as Pickens' van.

2
Speaker 2
[32:39.26 - 32:41.18]

Andy Pickens' white work van

[32:41.18 - 32:44.84]

was logged in by the security guard at that marina

[32:44.84 - 32:48.54]

on November 2, 2007,

[32:48.90 - 32:51.58]

between 6 a.m. and 6.30 a.m.,

[32:51.58 - 32:54.26]

the first time that van had ever been to the lake,

[32:54.50 - 32:56.58]

and it had never shown up afterward.

1
Speaker 1
[32:57.16 - 32:58.16]

When questioned,

[32:58.16 - 33:01.10]

Pickens denied ever having the van at the marina.

[33:01.84 - 33:03.62]

Pickens had the cargo area flooring

[33:03.62 - 33:06.24]

replaced in that van several days later,

[33:06.56 - 33:08.18]

and the man who did the work noted

[33:08.18 - 33:09.98]

that it smelled strongly of bleach.

[33:10.58 - 33:11.36]

Out of curiosity,

[33:11.60 - 33:13.98]

I used Carfax to pull the records on the van,

[33:14.38 - 33:16.18]

and I could see that the last reported mileage

[33:16.18 - 33:18.00]

was just over 93,000,

[33:18.24 - 33:21.72]

and the last record on file was August 20, 2007,

[33:21.94 - 33:23.44]

when the registration was renewed.

[33:23.78 - 33:25.68]

Then it simply disappeared.

[33:25.68 - 33:29.54]

Mike Rising and Carissa Drewo think they know why.

5
Speaker 5
[33:30.02 - 33:32.26]

I think they figured out it had been crushed.

4
Speaker 4
[33:32.70 - 33:34.16]

Like within a few days, I believe.

5
Speaker 5
[33:34.20 - 33:34.48]

Oh, yeah.

[33:34.72 - 33:37.66]

It was that evidence in itself

[33:37.66 - 33:39.34]

that it happened that quickly

[33:39.34 - 33:40.86]

because it was a functional van.

1
Speaker 1
[33:41.28 - 33:42.50]

And that houseboat of Andy's?

2
Speaker 2
[33:43.16 - 33:44.70]

I know that he completely,

[33:44.98 - 33:47.28]

that Andy Pickens completely redid the floor

[33:48.18 - 33:50.26]

and painted the walls and so forth

[33:50.26 - 33:52.44]

and changed the ceiling in that houseboat

[33:53.56 - 33:54.60]

before it sank.

1
Speaker 1
[33:54.60 - 33:57.74]

A newly refurbished houseboat that sinks

[33:57.74 - 34:00.68]

and a freshly cleaned van with new flooring

[34:00.68 - 34:01.74]

crushed.

[34:02.64 - 34:05.40]

Though Dylan Glass, Leon, and others

[34:05.40 - 34:06.72]

were repeatedly questioned,

[34:07.20 - 34:09.38]

no charges were ever brought against anyone,

[34:09.72 - 34:12.06]

and Justin was still listed as a missing person.

[34:13.04 - 34:14.64]

But in September of 2015,

[34:15.10 - 34:16.48]

nearly eight years later,

[34:17.06 - 34:18.12]

Dylan Glass talked,

[34:18.60 - 34:20.74]

and news broke that two arrests

[34:20.74 - 34:22.30]

had finally been made.

4
Speaker 4
[34:22.30 - 34:25.80]

News obtained tonight says Gaines was beaten and shot

[34:25.80 - 34:29.00]

before being stuffed into a black metal toolbox.

[34:29.56 - 34:32.08]

Tonight, a 57-year-old man is charged

[34:32.08 - 34:33.74]

with concealing a death in the case

1
Speaker 1
[34:33.74 - 34:36.02]

of then-18-year-old Justin Gaines.

4
Speaker 4
[34:36.06 - 34:38.86]

The arrest of Martin Wilkie on concealing a death charge

[34:38.86 - 34:42.24]

as investigators scoured high shoals in Walton County

[34:42.24 - 34:43.96]

looking for Gaines' remains.

[34:44.62 - 34:46.00]

The Wilkie arrest warrants...

1
Speaker 1
[34:46.00 - 34:47.30]

Tonight, a woman is in jail,

[34:47.48 - 34:49.80]

and she's charged in connection with the case.

4
Speaker 4
[34:49.80 - 34:53.58]

This is the first time we are seeing criminal Tammy Ballew.

[34:53.86 - 34:55.98]

Investigators say they begin making progress in this case

[34:55.98 - 34:58.84]

once federal inmate Dylan Glass started talking.

[34:59.40 - 35:01.24]

Glass' mom, Tammy Ballew...

1
Speaker 1
[35:01.24 - 35:04.62]

Now, in his first ever public interview,

[35:05.88 - 35:08.16]

Dylan Glass is ready to talk once again,

[35:08.78 - 35:10.42]

this time to me.

[35:11.00 - 35:14.30]

And he's ready to tell his side of this story.

3
Speaker 3
[35:15.50 - 35:16.98]

They threatened me with death penalties.

[35:17.34 - 35:18.58]

They threatened me with life sentences.

[35:19.26 - 35:20.90]

They locked me up on charges.

[35:21.96 - 35:23.58]

They're not telling the world that...

2
Speaker 2
[35:24.28 - 35:26.26]

Listen, when you take a man

3
Speaker 3
[35:27.42 - 35:28.58]

facing 125 years,

1
Speaker 1
[35:30.50 - 35:32.92]

and you lie to him,

3
Speaker 3
[35:33.36 - 35:35.88]

and you tell him if he say these things,

[35:36.04 - 35:37.96]

if he even act like he has remorse,

2
Speaker 2
[35:38.68 - 35:40.22]

that you'll get his time dropped,

3
Speaker 3
[35:41.08 - 35:43.94]

that you just want this to go away and all this bullshit,

[35:44.82 - 35:46.62]

you don't think a motherfucker gonna lie to him?

1
